Why I love Morven Park in Leesburg, Virginia

If you’ve been scrolling my page trying to figure out where to do your senior photos, let’s just cut to it: a great answer is almost always Morven Park.

I’ve shot more senior sessions at Morven than I can count at this point, and every single time I still find a new corner of it I love. It’s a little bit historic mansion, a little bit sprawling countryside, and a little bit secret garden which basically means it can give you every look you want without ever leaving the property.

Here’s why I keep bringing my seniors back here, and what I’ve learned about getting the most out of a session on those grounds.

That mansion porch is an instant classic

The front portico at the mansion with the big white columns, the dark green shutters, and that black-and-white checkerboard floor is one of those backdrops that just works. It’s clean, it’s classic, and it photographs like something out of a magazine without you having to do anything except show up and stand there.

This is usually where I start a session. The light on that porch in the early evening is soft and even, which means we get a few minutes of genuinely effortless photos before we’ve even walked anywhere else. If you want one photo that looks timeless – the kind you’ll still love in twenty years – this is where we get it.  During this session, Ella was obsessed with the porch images!

The gardens do all the work for you

Near the mansion, Morven’s boxwood gardens are where things get fun. Those brick steps tucked between the hedges are one of my favorite hidden spots on the property and most people walk right by them. However, they make for the kind of candid, walking-and-laughing shots that end up being everyone’s favorite from the whole session.

This is also where I like to bring in a little personality school gear, a favorite color, whatever makes the photos feel like you and not just a pretty location. A Virginia Tech tee against all that green? That’s the kind of detail that’ll matter way more to you in ten years than it seems like it will right now.

And if you’ve got a dog, bring the dog

Furry Friends welcome at Senior Portrait Session

Morven’s open fields are where I send anyone who wants something a little more relaxed, a little more golden-hour, a little less “posed portrait” and a little more “this is genuinely who I am.” Wildflowers, tall grass, that soft late-day light… and if you’ve got a dog who’s basically your best friend, this is where they come too. This is one of my all-time favorite senior sessions which ended with a golden retriever flopped in the field of daisies.

Why I love shooting seniors here specifically

I get asked a lot why I keep coming back to the same park for session after session, so here’s the honest answer: variety. In one afternoon at Morven Park, we can get the classic architectural portrait, the candid garden walk, and the dreamy wildflower or grass field – three completely different vibes, zero driving between locations. For a senior session, that means you walk away with a gallery that doesn’t look like it was all shot in fifteen minutes in the same spot. It looks like a whole story.  And I didn’t even mention the barn and dirt road!

And because I’ve shot here so many times, I know exactly where the light is best at any given hour, which corners get crowded on a Saturday, and which little pockets most photographers walk right past. That’s the kind of thing you only pick up after a lot of sessions in the same place – the difference between “nice photos” and photos that actually feel like you and will last forever.

If you’re a senior (or a senior’s very stressed-out parent) trying to figure out where to shoot, I’d love to talk it through with you. Morven Park is always high on my list, but I’ll help you figure out the right spot, the right time of day, and the right amount of golden retriever (or insert your furry friend here) for your session.

Location, location, location…

I know… you may be stressing out about where to have your portraits taken. That is one of the main issues my clients have when they meet with me. “Where do you suggest? I want x, y, z…”.  But don’t worry… I got you.

One of my favorite things to do is drive around and search out new locations. For my seniors, they so often want those dreamy field locations.  Or they want wildflowers. And my goal is to always provide them with options so that they can make the best decision and love their finished portraits.  I consider it one of the most important aspects of my job.

I work hard to know (or at least find out) mowing cycles of the properties I frequent the most. And guess what… if I haven’t been there in over a month, I’ll go do a site visit even if it is an hour away.  This doesn’t always guarantee a venue won’t make a change the day before a session. Unfortunately, they don’t alert us photographers to these changes.  I sure wish they would though.

For this fall I have two new beautiful locations – Rush Manor and Dodona Manor. Both of these locations are free and offer gardens, walkways, columns, porches, and more! I went with my assistant to take photos at both locations so that clients can see the possibilities.

I am currently booking senior portraits for Fall 2026 and my dates will fill up. If you are interested in booking with me, please do fill out my form and schedule a consultation with me.

Rust Manor
Rust Manor provides a natural setting with beautiful gardens and a beautiful porch with columns.

Dodona Manor
The George C. Marshall offers beautifully manicured grounds, a rose garden, and a house with a porch, door frames, and more.

What makes me different?

I always tell every client that there is a photographer for everyone. Just like any business, shopping around is normal. I know that I won’t book everyone who meets with me – even if I would love that to happen. Some clients only want digital images for posting to social media. Some clients only want a mini session that lasts 20-30 minutes. And then there are some who want full customer service with planning down to the last detail. That is my client.

I do not do mini session. My shortest package is 45 minutes for college graduates which fits their needs perfectly. It allows them to get images on their college campus with their cap and gown.  This could also be applied towards a high school graduate as well – especially if they don’t want a full senior session.  But beyond that, I am here to hold my clients’ hands and walk them through the whole process from consultation to product delivery.

One step I always take is making sure to do a site visit to the clients’ desired location. This is a really important step for me because my senior clients often have very specific requests for their portraits. It might be fields or flowers or some other detail that they find meaningful. I hate to show up on the day of the session and find things have changed.  Sure, we always have to be flexible because nature is ever-changing but if I can mitigate any stress on the day of I will do it.  Especially when fields are involved. I mean how dare they mow them without consulting me!

So if you want a photographer who will create the session of your dreams all down to the small details, please reach out! I am available via phone, Instagram, email, WhatsApp… whatever works for you.  We can meet, talk about the ideas you have for your senior session, and I’ll explain how I will work to make that happen.

Golden hour in beautiful fields in Northern Virginia

Everyone wants a beautiful field at sunset

The number one request that I receive from seniors is, “I’d like a pretty field at sunset.”  It is definitely on trend right now to wear a white dress and pose in a field with that golden light highlighting the hair.  The problem can sometimes be where to find these perfect fields.

I remember last fall I thought I had the perfect location for a senior. I had just been there a month earlier for a session and she loved those images.  We planned to go to the same spot.  I arrived 20 minutes early for the session, as I always do, and to my horror, the field had been mowed.

I started to panic. However, I didn’t stay frozen. Part of being a photographer is also being a strategist and problem solver.  I hopped in my car and drove around to others parts of our location to see what I could salvage. I was so scared that she would arrive and be disappointed or want to cancel the session.  Thankfully, I was able to find some spots that would work for us.

We spent a lot of time going from spot to spot that day, but, you’d never know the original fields were mowed. We found multiple fields and she was able to get that golden glow that she wanted.

I always want my clients to feel like I have gone above and beyond for them. It isn’t enough to provide beautiful images… I want them to feel like I took care of them from planning to session to product delivery.  They should never have to worry about anything.  My latest reviews show me that I am excelling and I would love to do that for you, too.

You can be sure that if your child wants a beautiful field, I’ll get that for them. Or flowers. Mountains. Barns. I am happy to find the perfection location.
